A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck near the Pacific nation of Tonga, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck at a depth of 14.5 km, 219 km northwest of Bangai Island, at 7:40 pm local time.

No tsunami risk from the earthquake has been reported.

It comes after an underwater volcanic eruption earlier this month triggered a tsunami that caused widespread damage.

Humanitarian aid for the Pacific island nation is expected to intensify after ash is removed from the airport, making it safe for planes to land.

Aid agencies have warned that access to clean drinking water remains a critical problem during ongoing cleanup efforts.
