A beach in eastern Thailand has been declared a disaster area as oil leaking from an underwater pipeline in the Gulf of Thailand continues to wash the beach and heat the sand.
The spill, from a pipeline owned by Star Petroleum Refining, started late Tuesday and was brought under control a day after an estimated 50,000 liters (11,000 gallons) of oil spilled into the ocean about 12 miles (20 km) east of industrial country. the coast.
Some oil reached the shoreline at Mae Rampong Beach in Rayong Province late Friday after spreading more than 18 square miles (47 square kilometers) of sea into the Gulf.
The Thai Navy is working with the company to contain the spill and said the main oil mass remains offshore, with only a small amount of water at at least two points along the seven-mile shore.
The Navy said about 150 workers from the Star Petroleum refinery and 200 Navy personnel have been deployed to clean the shore, and oil booms have been set up. Twelve warships, three civilian ships and a number of aircraft were in service to help contain the seepage at sea using booms and spray dispersants.
“We and the company are still working out at sea to reduce the amount of oil by sealing, oil absorbing and dispersant spraying,” said R Adam Arthurn Chapineau, Senior Vice Commandant, Marine Area Command.
