Former President Donald Trump has again raised the possibility that he could run again in 2024 and said he would consider pardoning those accused of rioting in the Capitol on Jan. 6 if he wins the election. “Another thing we’re going to do — and so many people are asking me about it — is if I run and if I win, we’ll treat those people fairly from Jan. 6. We’ll treat them fairly,” Trump said at a rally in Conroe, Texas. “And if they need forgiveness, we will give them forgiveness. Because they are not treated fairly. ”

Trump’s comments featured how the former president and many of his allies are trying to rewrite history and act as if the January 6 attack on the Capitol wasn’t really a big deal and everyone involved should to forgive. Some even say the attack on the Capitol was motivated by the FBI and identify the approximately 50 people detained prior to the trial in connection with the riot as “political prisoners.” More than 700 people have been charged in connection with the riot at the Capitol. “It is a shame. Most of those charged in connection with the riot face misdemeanor charges, meaning any sentences are likely to end before Trump moves to the White House again. But many also face some cases that can be jailed for years.
