Former President Donald Trump has again raised the possibility that he could run again in 2024 and said he would consider pardoning those accused of rioting in the Capitol on Jan. 6 if he wins the election. “Another thing we’re going to do — and so many people are asking me about it — is if I run and if I win, we’ll treat those people fairly from Jan. 6. We’ll treat them fairly,” Trump said at a rally in Conroe, Texas. “And if they need forgiveness, we will give them forgiveness. Because they are not treated fairly. ”

Trump’s comments featured how the former president and many of his allies are trying to rewrite history and act as if the January 6 attack on the Capitol wasn’t really a big deal and everyone involved should to forgive. Some even say the attack on the Capitol was motivated by the FBI and identify the approximately 50 people detained prior to the trial in connection with the riot as “political prisoners.” More than 700 people have been charged in connection with the riot at the Capitol. “It is a shame. It’s a shame, ”Trump said of the prosecutions.

Most of those charged in connection with the riot face misdemeanor charges, meaning any sentences are likely to end before Trump moves to the White House again. But many also face some cases that can be jailed for years. Some of those faced with the heaviest case complained that Trump did little to help them in his last days in office even though he forgave other allies. If any of his supporters believe Trump has a good chance of winning, the suggestion of pardons could affect their decision on whether to accept any deals in the plea.

Trump has not only complained of prosecutions against rioters in the Capitol but also of the investigations he and his businesses face from New York prosecutors. “These prosecutors are vicious, horrible people. They are racist and very hurtful — they are mentally ill,” he said. “They are pursuing me without any protection of my rights from the Supreme Court. or most other courts. In fact, they are not after me, they are after you. ” The former president called for “the biggest protest we have ever experienced” if prosecutors “commit anything wrong or illegal.
