K-State Off to Solid Start at Big 12 Indoor Championships

AMES, Iowa The Kansas State track and field teams sit in fifth and seventh places, respectively, after day one of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, while they advanced 11 individuals to the Finals in their respective events at the Lied Recreation Center.

The K-State Women’s team sits in fifth place with 24 points, while the men’s team is in seventh place with 14 points. The Texas Tech men (41 points) and the Oklahoma State women (50 points) each lead the competition.

“The big thing today is Qualifying,” stated the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. “From my perspective, I thought we qualified pretty well. Those that made it to the Finals, took care of the business. The events that were the Finals, some of them were good and some were not so good, but that’s just a track meet.”

Moving onto the Finals on Saturday are junior Hadley Splechter (mile, 4: 03.78), senior Vitoria Sena Batista Alves (60-meter hurdles, 8.49), senior Alex Ferguson (600-yard, 1: 21.50), freshman Antonio Hanson (600-yard, 1: 09.31), sophomore Kyle Gale (400-meter, 46.57), junior O’shalia Johnson (400-meter, 53.40), junior Shalysa Wray (400-meter, 53.83), junior Sydney Burton (1,000-meter, 2: 50.46), junior Kassidy Johnson (800-meter, 2: 09.57), fifth-year senior Wurrie Njadoe (200-meter, 23.91) and freshman Kavian Kerr (200-meter, 21.10).

“I thought Sydney Burton did a really good job, “said Rovelto.” She ran well in the 1,000-meter and she had yet to run that race. I thought she did well in the distance Medley relays, both teams did well in the distance Medley Relays. “

The Women’s team got 13 points in the weight throw competition, including a second-place finish by junior Emma Robbins with a heave of 20.47m / 67-2. Close behind in fourth place with a personal-best throw of 19.59m / 64-3.25 was sophomore Jasmine Greer. Rounding out the competition was sophomore Emily Fuhr (ninth, 18.52m / 60-5.25) and sophomore Lacey Pavlak with a personal-best (12^th17.99m / 59-0.25).

The Wildcats also scored points in the Women’s distance Medley relay (fourth place), Women’s pole vault (fifth place) and Women’s long jump (seventh place).

Competing for the first time in the Women’s distance Medley relay was Kassidy Johnson, O’shalia Johnson, Macy Heinz and Jaybe Shufelbergerwho scored 5 points with a fourth place with a time of 11: 24.82.

Freshman Velecia Williams scored 2 points in the Women’s long jump with a leap of 6.21m / 20-4.50 for a seventh-place finish. Fifth-year senior Taishia Pryce tied for 15^th with a mark of 5.74m / 18-10.

Earning a spot on the podium for the first time as a Wildcat was senior Tommi Hintnaus. The Arizona State transfer placed fifth overall in the Women’s pole vault with a height of 4.07m / 13-4.25.

On the men’s side, the Wildcats scored points in the distance Medley relay (fourth place), long jump (fourth place) and weight throw (fifth place).

Freshman Kavian Kerr jumped his way to a fourth-place finish to score 5 points at his first Big 12 meet in the long jump with a leap of 7.57m / 24-10.

Recording a time of 9: 55.03 in the men’s distance Medley relay, Splechter, Tim Lambert Jr., Will Carroll and Mike Rohlinger finish the race in fourth place for 5 points.

Sophomore Kade McCall made his way to a podium spot, finishing in fifth place to score 4 points for the Wildcats in the men’s weight throw 19.74m / 69-9.25.

K-State also had a strong start in the men’s heptathlon and women’s pentathlon on day one.

Freshman Carl af Forselles Ranks third in the men’s heptathlon standings with 3,109 points after four events. The Sweden native had a personal-best in three out of four events. In fourth place is freshman Emil Uhlin with 3,041 points. Uhlin clinched first place in the shot put (13.14m / 43-1.50) and high jump (2.05m / 6-8.75) with personal bests in all four events.

Freshman Madelyn McCabe leads the way for the Wildcats in the Women’s Pentathlon with a personal-best score of 3,735 to sit in 10^th place. Right behind McCabe is junior Urte Bacianskaite in 11^th place with a personal-best score of 3,723.

Another solid performance on day one came in the men’s pole vault, as sophomores Brian Simon and Jesse Pinkley placed in the Top 10. Simon concluded the event in eighth place (4.87m / 15-11.75) with a personal-best mark, while Pinkley came in ninth place (4.72m / 15-5.75).
