Local police stations host prom dress giveaway – FOX13 News Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The weather is warming up, and for high school students, that means prom season is right around the corner.

As students decide on the perfect pieces of formal wear to complete their look for this special occasion, some local police stations are teaming up to help promgoers make those selections.

The Tillman and EH Crump Memphis locations are now accepting donations for their Prom Closet.

“We got prom dresses, we got ties, we got suits, we got things we can donate to kids,” said Colonel Vincent Beasley.

Organizers told FOX13 they’re launching this initiative for families who may not be able to afford prom attire this year, especially amid the pandemic.

“We just wanted to give back to the community,” said Beasley. “We figured COVID caused so many problems for so many people; people lost jobs; people don’t have money.”

Col. Beasley told FOX13 this initiative is truly a community effort and comes from a genuine concern for the area’s youth.

He said despite popular stereotypes, he wants people to know that local law enforcement is doing plenty of good in the Memphis community.

“The police are not always out doing things that other people don’t like–like arresting people,” said Beasley. “We’re giving back to the community and that’s what it’s all about and we’re excited about it.”

75 dresses and 40 pairs of shoes have been donated so far.

The police stations are asking for the following gently used items:

• Women’s Dresses
• Women’s Shoes
• Men’s Dress Shirts
• Men’s Ties/Cummerbunds
• Sport’s Coats/Pants
• Men’s Dress Shoes

Donations can be dropped off 24/7 at 426 Tillman or the 949 EH Crump location. For those unable to access the drop-off locations, organizers I a pickup can be arranged. The giveaway is set for April 9.
