Mumbai: A special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act court this week acquired a 24-year-old former national table tennis player, Lalrinpuia Lalchhuankima, over four years after he was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau for allegedly smuggling 3.9kg of the drug methaqualone.
Acquitting the Mizoram native, the special judge said, “This court holds that the Prosecution has failed to prove that the Accused has committed the offense as alleged by the Prosecution.”
The special NDPS court further said that it is going through the entire evidence added by the Witnesses, it creates doubt on the fact with regard to the entire investigation of the case and that the Accused has the real knowledge of the nature of the substance shown to have kept in his possession, more especially the Accused has declined to have claimed such baggage.
Lalchhuankima was Arrested on December 13, 2017, on his arrival at Mumbai International Airport from Mozambique along with another person.
During the trial in the drugs case, the Prosecution examined five Witnesses. Lalchhuankima denied the allegations.
Finding Lalchhuankima not guilty, the special NDPS court said that it had come to the conclusion that the Prosecution had miserably failed to discharge its burden in the case and the Accused is entitled to receive the benefit of the child on the part of the Prosecution.
