4.4 magnitude earthquake recorded 31 miles from St. George

ST. GEORGE — A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded in northern Arizona, just 31 miles south of St. George, on Monday afternoon.

The quake began at 3:18 pm, according to the United States Geological Survey, and was felt in Mesquite, Nevada, St. George, Kanab and Cedar City.

Some St. George residents said the shaking lasted a while and felt more like a “rolling” rather than a short rumble. One resident said it was the biggest quake he has felt in the area in decades.

It’s unclear if the quake caused any damage, but the United States Geological Survey estimates that there is a low probability of consequence or damage as a result.
