Michigan State observations: Offensive second-half issues; dont blame the defense

After rough losses against Washington and Minnesota, Michigan State suffered a third straight loss, this time to the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday. The Spartans faced the most lethal offense on their schedule thus far as the Terrapins entered the game averaging 7.4 yards per play. While MSU looked more competitive than the previous two weeks, the final result was still the same in a 27-13 loss, and the Spartans are 2-3, with a daunting slate ahead of them.

“I told the team there is not a whole lot to say right now. There’s nothing I can say to make them feel better,” head coach Mel Tucker said.

He’s right. There isn’t any speech or motivational quote that can fix any of the problems this team is facing.

Entering the game, Michigan State’s biggest concern was how the defense would hold up against Maryland’s offense. As it turns out, the Spartans’ defense held up OK, but the offense failed to take advantage of that in the second half despite its slow first half.

While there were plenty of negatives, there were some positives, so let’s dive into some observations from Saturday:
