A former White House aide to Donald Trump reportedly told the House select committee investigating the 6 January Capitol riots that he witnessed the former president “shredding” documents.

“Have I ever seen him tearing up notes? I don’t know what the documents are but they are there [was] tearing,” Nick Luna said in his March 21 testimony before the committee, CBS News reported.

Asked again by Dan George, the committee’s senior investigative counsel, if the 45th president had torn up some documents, Mr Luna replied: “That’s right.”

Meanwhile, the House Ways and Means Committee voted on Tuesday to release six years of Mr Trumps tax returns to the public.

The former president has long tried to prevent disclosure of the returns, fighting a request for his records all the way to the Supreme Court.

It’s unclear how quickly his taxes will be released, but with just two weeks left until Republicans formally take control of the House, this could be the last chance for Democrats to reveal any new information they’ve obtained.

Asked again by Dan George, the committee’s senior investigative counsel, whether Mr Trump had torn up some documents, Mr Luna replied: That is correct.

He also testified that White House chief of staff Mark Meadows ordered him not to enter the room before a meeting with state Republican lawmakers who wanted to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

There was one time where it was basically my job to go in and make sure of that [the] the president is comfortable regardless of the situation, Mr Luna told the committee. And I remember, specifically, this time [Meadows] said, Don’t, don’t come in, don’t come into the room now.

A House select committee on January 6 was reportedly cooperating extensively with the Department of Justice in investigating Donald Trump’s efforts to subvert the 2020 election.

This includes providing documents and data pertaining to Mr Trump’s former White House chief of staff and the conservative law professor who pushed for the plan.

According to Punchbowl News, the panel has begun sending documents to the office of special counsel Jack Smith, the prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee investigations into Mr Trump’s conduct.

In particular, the committee reportedly provided Mr Smith’s office with documents and transcripts relating to Mark Meadows, who served as Mr Trump’s final White House chief of staff from April 2020 until the end of his term in January 2021.
