A 16-year-old schoolboy was ambushed by a masked gang on rented bikes who surrounded him before stabbing him, according to witnesses.
Police were alerted to reports of a stabbing attack in Seward Street, Clerkenwell around 10:30pm on Tuesday.
Officers attended with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and found two men, both 16, suffering from stab wounds. Despite the efforts of the emergency services, one of the teens died at the scene.
Khadra Hussain, 40, a mother of six, said on Wednesday: “My friend saw the boy and was about to cross the road. Then five boys attacked him, most of them on rented bikes, some of them running.
The attackers wore hats and face coverings. The victim was also in a hoodie. He was lying on the road and two people ran to help him with injuries and the attackers dispersed.

“There was a boy next to the victim crying ‘He’s next to a friend, he’s my friend,’ he was crying.” Then the police and paramedics showed up and I saw them working on him, it’s sad.”
She said she feared for the life of her 16-year-old son.
“I worry even when he goes to the local Tesco. I pray he brings her back alive.”
A witness spoke of her horror after hearing the boy repeatedly shout “stab me” as he was cornered and attacked.
The mother said, “There was a boy shouting: ‘I was stabbed'” over and over. Make our blood run cold. He is attacked by a group of boys, some on bicycles. The paramedics worked on him for at least 20 minutes, but from his screams we knew he was very dangerous. I couldn’t sleep, poor boy.”

On Wednesday, investigators were searching for evidence while forensic officers roamed the crime scene.
There was a tent marking the place where the victim collapsed after being attacked by the attackers.
A woman whose apartment overlooks the scene spoke of her horror at the events that took place outside her home.
The mother of one said, “I have to explain to my daughter why there is police tape outside and why blue lights were flashing outside most of the night. People shouldn’t live with this. Another day another victim, it’s not good enough.”
Bunhill ward counselor Phil Graham said: “It’s devastating for all of us because we know the area. It doesn’t help the police with the wound, we only have three neighborhood police on the ward. My deepest condolences to the family. It makes you think your kids are coming home.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “There have been no arrests. A crime scene has been located. An investigation is ongoing.”
