Purdue Football adds Texas Transfer QB Hudson card

As I said on Facebook earlier today when the news of Brady Allen was heading to the transfer portal, portal give and portal take. At that point we thought Purdue had lost their QB of the future and someone who was the cornerstone of this Purdue offense for 2-3 years. Unfortunately, that was not to be, and we wish Mr. Allen nothing but the best no matter where he ends up (unless he lands at ND or IU).

The news was relayed just a few hours later when Pete Thamel tweeted that Hudson Card, formerly of the University of Texas, was transferring to Purdue.

The language of that tweet is interesting to me because it says he committed to Purdue earlier in the day. Could Allen have learned of this information and then decided that he wasn’t going to get an opportunity, so he decided to look elsewhere for an opportunity? I doubt we’ll ever know the sequence of events.

I have a couple of good friends who are Texas football fans, big Texas football fans, so I asked them what they thought about Cardi and this is what I got back;

Hudson could be good for you. He was highly recruited and just never got it going. He won the starting job in 2021, but lost the job during the Arkansas game because he played absolutely horribly and never got the job back. This year, he lost a preseason battle against Ewers. He played a few games this year when Ewers was injured and never played poorly. He has wheels he can use and a cannon. Sometimes decisions were made with happy feet, which led to difficulties. If you use a fast tempo, feed your shot, get it out of the offense, which Graham Harrell probably does, he can be really good. He had a tendency to hang onto the ball too long and get sacked.

All in all, some good and some bad, but when Texas got Arch Manning, it seemed like it made the most sense for Card to find a new home. Card is from Texas and actually went to high school in Austin, which is Drew Brees’ high school rival. Card was a top 40 recruit coming out of high school, according to ESPN. ESPN ranked him as the second-best dual-threat QB in the class, behind only Bryce Young of Alabama.

This year at Texas, he played in six games, four of which saw meaningful minutes. Overall, he finished the season completing 69.4% of his passes with six touchdowns and just one interception. He will have three years of eligibility remaining when he enrolls at Purdue.
