10 min: Manchester City try to force their way through the middle, linking Rodri with Kevin De Bruyne. Marc Roca puts his foot down on the field and wins the ball back for Leeds United, who remain earnest in control as they try to weather this early storm.

8 mins: Brenden Aaronson is sent sprinting his way down the right for Leeds but is sent off by Rodri. American pleas for a free kick to no avail. It seemed to me that he simply took on the Manchester City midfielder.

7 minutes: Rico Lewis plays with De Bruyne outside the Leeds penalty area. The Belgian whips a poisonous bullet high and wide. It’s all in City at these early stages.

6 min: Kevin De Bruyne sends one of his signature volleys behind the Leeds United defence, trying to get the ball out of Erling Haaland. Ilan Mesler quickly runs off his line for an interception.

4 min: Having survived that early scare, Leeds try to get into the game. Pascal Strick and Wilfred Genonto combine down the inner left but the cross for Brendan Aaronson in the City penalty area goes awry.

1 min: A very early chance for City as Ilan Meslier runs down his line to try and stop Erling Haaland from tipping the ball over him from outside the penalty area. The City forward had jumped a rebound from Nathan Ake and attempted to volley the ball into the Leeds goal. Mesler had enough hand on the ball to deflect it wide.

Leeds United’s departure against Manchester City…

One minute: After a minute’s applause for the late World Cup winner George Cohen, the match begins. City started, and its players wore red and black shirts, black shorts and black and red socks. Leeds players wear white.

Not too long now: Teams emerge from the Elland Road tunnel, with both teams wearing sweatshirts over their jerseys to keep out the Christmas chill. Liam Cooper leads the hosts, while Ilkay Gundogan leads Manchester City.

Elland Road is full. One of the most vibrant stadiums in the Premier League, the hosts will need every decibel their fans can generate on their behalf tonight. It’s hard to see Manchester City’s winning past but… you never know. Having said that, I expect a fairly certain win with City.

Leeds-born Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is an obvious starter against his parent’s former club Alfie, where he will take on his former Salzburg coach Jesse Marsh. Jack Grealish also lines up against Leeds, with Cole Palmer making way from the side that started in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Liverpool. Ederson returned to the City goal, while John Stones plays Emeric Laporte’s place in the heart of the City defence.

Early team news

Leeds United are without Tyler Adams, the suspended USA captain tonight on the back of his late dismissal against Tottenham Hotspur last time out. Long-term absentees Stuart Dallas (broken leg) and Archie Gray (ankle) are also sidelined. Goalkeeper Ilan Meslier is also suspected of being ill, while striker Patrick Bamford, wingers Crescencio Summerville and Jack Harrison, fullback Liam Cooper and central defender Matthews Klech are also big doubts. Cliche is expected to take control of the club in January, with MLS club DC United making a generous offer.

Manchester City will be without Calvin Phillips, who Pep Guardiola considered carrying a lot of wood upon his return from his World Cup stint with England. Oh, to be “fat” like the arch defensive midfielder. Presumably still bulking up somewhere in Argentina while celebrating his pivotal role in his country’s World Cup victory, Julian Alvarez is also unavailable. Central defender Ruben Diaz will also be absent with a hamstring injury.

Season’s greetings to all. The festive agenda continues with tonight’s match between Leeds United and Manchester City at Elland Road. Despite being heavy favorites to retain the title, the defending champions sit in third place, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.

In their most recent outing in the Premier League in mid-November, they lost 2-1 at home to Brentford. Leeds United, its host tonight, lost by a strange goal from seven in an exciting match at White Hart Lane on the same day. With both sides looking to get back on their winning ways in the First Division tonight, it will be Yorkshire’s kick-off at 8pm. In the meantime, stay connected with team news and composition.
