Miss Vietnam Phuong Anh under fire for see-through dress at 2022 beauty pageant

Organizers of the Miss Vietnam 2022 beauty pageant were forced to apologize after an uproar over the contestants’ transparent dresses.

Model Phuong Anh was seen wearing a “sheer” yellow dress in a very sheer material that showed off her body underneath.

The 24-year-old athlete took the stage to give the first runner-up title to contestant Trinh Thuy Linh.

Phuong – who was the first runner up in the 2020 competition – said she felt “embarrassed” by the outfit, adding she had “learned a lesson” in her fashion choices.

The organizers of the event issued an apology to fans who were angry over the controversial dress.

“Unfortunately an incident occurred with runner-up Pham Ngoc Phuong Anh’s outfit,” they said in a statement shared by VnExpress.

“The dress when viewed from certain angles creates an unflattering image on stage.

“The organizers of Miss Vietnam 2022 apologize to the audience and fans for not anticipating and not being able to prevent such an incident in advance.”

The deputy head of the organizing committee, Pham Kim Dung, claims that the clothes worn on stage are usually chosen with great care before the event.

However, she said that on this occasion, not all the lights were turned on during the dress rehearsal, meaning they didn’t notice any problems with the dress.

Social media platforms were flooded with comments from viewers outraged by the dress, while others rushed to defend Phuong Anh.

“Silly obscenities that lead to cultural rejection of the Miss Vietnam pageant,” wrote one Twitter user.

“This outfit isn’t even fit for a beauty pageant,” another said on Facebook.

“It doesn’t look good on television. He should be more careful next time.”

“She’s wearing a bodysuit underneath, not underwear, so I don’t see anything inappropriate here,” wrote one netizen.

“People are overreacting. I think the organizers are also to blame for this incident. They have a team to monitor clothing and keep letting this happen.”

The famous Miss Universe beauty pageant underwent some new changes earlier this year.

For the first time in the institution’s history, the competition has expanded its eligibility rules to allow married women and mothers to compete.

The historic change will be made for the first time in the 2023 competition.

The current 70 year rule states that only single women between the ages of 18 and 28, who have never married or had children, are allowed to apply.

However, the age group will remain the same, according to a source close to the organization Insiders.

“We all believe that women should have agency over their lives and that personal human decisions should not stand in the way of their success,” an internal memo seen by The National said.
