Donald Trump Jr. MAGA ‘Disaster’ opens

Donald Trump Jr. declared on Tuesday his support for Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy of California to become House speaker while calling a MAGA movement against McCarthy a “disaster.”

Former President Donald Trump’s eldest son posted about the speaker vote on Twitter in response to a tweet from journalist Jake Sherman. The original message from Sherman—the co-founder of Punchbowl News—mentioned how some of the more conservative members of Congress were planning to block McCarthy from the speakership.

Sherman wrote that Republican Representatives Matt Gaetz of Florida, Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania said they “don’t mind” if Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York is elected McCarthy’s spokesman. Republican lawmakers, who have in the past aligned themselves with Trump Sr. and in his MAGA movement, said they “wanted their OWN legal entity in the House to prosecute lawsuits,” according to Sherman.

“We all want House leadership to be as conservative as possible, but I’m not okay with throwing House Leadership to Dems & Never Trumpers,” Trump Jr. tweeted.

“Hakeem Jeffries being okay with being Speaker despite McCarthy’s woes is not what any Republican voted for in November. Disaster.”

Trump Jr. also wrote. about the GOP’s disagreement about McCarthy on his father’s Truth Social platform.

“Heard we could have a never-Trumper or a Dem for Speaker. McCarthy is focused on a Select Committee on the politics of Federal Law Enforcement and real investigations into the Biden Admin and the border. But we’re not going to get any of that with a Never-Trumper as Speaker!”

Despite Trump’s statements, McCarthy missed the first and second ballots to become speaker of the House on Tuesday. Nineteen Republicans voted against him in each roll-call vote.

Before the vote, McCarthy was supported by Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who was viewed by many as more conservative than McCarthy. After the California congressman failed to hold more Republicans in a meeting ahead of Tuesday’s vote, Greene spoke out against McCarthy’s opponents.

While venting his frustrations to reporters after the meeting, Greene mentioned Gaetz and Boebert by name.

He criticized Gaetz for blocking McCarthy after he called a compromise on the GOP rules package “extraordinary.” Greene also denounced Boebert for antagonizing McCarthy after taking money from him for his midterms reelection campaign.

Meanwhile, the entire Democratic caucus voted against McCarthy by supporting Jeffries, who received 212 votes to McCarthy’s 203 on both ballots. None of the representatives who collected the 218 mentioned needed to be elected speaker.

On the second ballot, Jim Jordan of Ohio received all 19 non-McCarthy votes after nominating McCarthy and urging his party to vote for the Californian.
