Scarlets statement: Club respond to Ross Moriarty allegations

Welsh rugby player Ross Moriarty has slammed fans who he says yelled at his 13-year-old cousin during the Dragons’ loss to the Scarlets.

During a New Years game, Dragons back row member Moriarty was involved in a controversial incident in which he received a yellow card for removing the scrum cap of an opposing player, Sione Kalamafoni .

The Scarlets responded by throwing punches at Moriarty and were later shown a red card and banned for two weeks. The disciplinary committee cited Moriarty’s “highly provocative and potentially dangerous actions” as a factor in the length of the ban.

It would appear during the game at Parc y Scarlets that Moriarty’s young cousin was abused as he tried to defend him.

The Wales international posted on Instagram: “I don’t mind the abuse I get online or on the rugby pitch from fans there will always be 2 sides but learning that at the weekend my little cousin who is 13 years old had grown up screaming men in her face for asking them to stop verbally insulting me which is not right for me or should not be placed on a sports field This is a line i really hope people shouldn’t think it’s right to cross over.

In response to Ross Moriarty’s Instagram post and the ensuing story on WalesOnline, the Scarlets have issued the following statement.

We are extremely disappointed to read about the incident involving Ross Moriarty’s cousin during the New Years game against the Dragons.

“We are working extremely hard with our supporter organizations Crys16 and Scarlets Officials Supporters Group to create a family environment for fans home and away at Parc y Scarlets and hear about a young girl who has been verbally abused by the from a fan is completely unacceptable.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse of any kind at our stadium and encourage supporters to report such incidents to the club. Should the family wish to contact us, we will investigate further.
