The High Court on Sunday ordered relevant authorities to investigate the alleged misappropriation of Tk 1,500 by Mohammad Yeasin Chowdhury, managing director of FMC dockyard Limited.

The HC bench consisting of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat ordered the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the allegation within two weeks.

The HC bench adopted the suo moto order when ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam came to the court’s attention after attaching a report published in a vernacular daily on January 5 titled “Yeasin Abroad after embezzling Tk 1,500 crore”.

The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the respondents’ failure to take action against MD Yeasin should not be declared unlawful.

The court also set March 9 as the next hearing.

Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.

According to the newspaper report, MD Yeasin embezzled Tk 1,500 crore from different banks and financial institutions and fled the country.

A number of cases have been filed against him in Chattogram and a warrant for his arrest has also been issued.

MD Yeasin has taken loans of Tk 1,243 crore from a number of banks. In addition, he owes Tk 113.83 crore to Bismillah Marine Services.
