No. 10/10 men’s basketball was won by Texas Tech, 72-70

AUSTIN, Texas Graduated guard Marcus Carr recorded a team-high 20 points to lead 10/10 Texas (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) to a 72-70 victory over Texas Tech (10-7, 0-5 Big 12) on Saturday night at Moody Center. For the second straight contest, the Longhorns rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half.

UT improved to 8-1 under the interim head coach Rodney Terry. Texas’ 15-2 start to the season is its best 17-game start to the year since the 2009-10 team opened the season with 17 straight wins.

Carr scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and matched his season highs with six rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes. Graduate from Sir’Jabari rice scored 15 of his 18 points (8-10 feet) in the second half and added four assists, two blocks and two steals in 29 minutes. Super senior Timmy Allen recorded 17 points while converting on 6-of-9 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws in 29 minutes. Dylan Disu tied his career high with five blocks in 19 minutes.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a tally by Fardaws Aimaq at 16:01. An Allen jumper cut the margin to 19-17 with 6:05 left, but Texas Tech responded with a 10-1 spurt over the next four minutes to build a 29-18 advantage after Kevin Obanor’s free throws. The Red Raiders extended their lead to as many as 12 points (34-22) on Pop Isaacs’ 3-pointer at the 1:12 mark before the Longhorns scored the final three points of the half to close the gap to 34-25. on break.

In UT’s most recent game against TCU on Wednesday (Jan. 11), the Longhorns erased a 12-point deficit (61-49) with 9:36 left. In Saturday’s contest against the Red Raiders, Texas Tech grabbed a 10-point lead (40-30) after De’Vion Harmon made a free throw with 16:57 left. UT used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the margin to 40-38 after Carr’s free throw at the 14:38 mark.

The Red Raiders led 44-41 after Jaylon Tyson’s jumper with 13:19 left. Texas went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to grab a 50-44 advantage after the period Artery of Morris ending at 10:31. UT increased its cushion to 53-46 after Carr’s 3-pointer with 9:17 left before Texas Tech scored seven straight points to tie the score at 53-53 after a pair of free throws by Isaacs at the 7:33 mark.

Rice’s 3-pointer with 5:07 left gave the Longhorns the lead for good (56-53). Texas increased its cushion to 66-60 after Allen’s 3-pointer with 46 seconds left, and UT made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 20 seconds for the win.

Texas returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 17 when it travels to face No. 14/14 Iowa State. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM Central at Hilton Coliseum, with the game televised nationally by Big 12 Now/ESPN+.
