Bandera County GOP leaders charged over fraud allegations

The president and treasurer of the Republican parties in Bandera County have been charged and arrested following allegations of fraud, according to media reports.

Butch Streigl, the party chairman; and Rene Leith, its treasurer, surrendered Friday on the charge of fraudulently securing the execution of documents between $2,500 and $30,000.

The indictment states that in March 2022, then-President Lynn Haueter discovered that she had been taken from the organizations of three bank accounts totaling $13,000 at Wells Fargo Bank at the request of Streigls, according to the Bandera Bulletin. Streigl reportedly presented the bank with a document claiming that Haueter had been censored and ordered to relinquish the organization’s websites and financial assets.

Cat Parks, who was the organization’s vice president at the time, told the Bulletin that the censorship was baseless and unenforceable.

That month, Streigl was elected after running unopposed to replace Haueter in the Republican primary, although his term was not due to begin until June. Leith had acted as president of Precinct 306, but despite losing her re-election bid last March, Streigl later named her treasurer.

The investigation by the Bandera County Sheriff’s Office was presented to a grand jury on January 10.
