Pakistan veteran Nida Dar was possibly lucky not to be given out after a late withdrawal during Saturday’s ODI against Australia at North Sydney Oval.

During the Pakistanis’ 27th run chase, Dar walked away from a Tahlia McGrath delivery that crashed into his off-stump.

Umpire Claire Polosak signaled a dead ball and play resumed without much protest from the Australians, but commentators questioned whether the 36-year-old was given extra life at the crease.

Dar had pulled away after McGrath released the ball, and pundits theorized what would have happened had Australia opted to bowl.

I was always under the impression that when you were in your stance and you tapped your bat, you were ready to take the delivery,” former Australian captain Rachael Haynes said on Fox Cricket.

Nida Dar has to be a bit careful there.

Former Australian batsman Alex Blackwell continued: I thought it was fair; he didn’t see the ball.

Replays showed that Dar looked up to see McGrath go into his delivery phase but pulled away before the ball was released.

Channel 9 reporter Mark Gottlieb tweeted: This should come out. We talk a lot about overcharging in cricket, but bowlers shouldn’t have to wait until the batter is ready before they start running in.

Cricket commentator Sam Tugwell sent the message: It’s over. The ball is really out of Tahlias’ hands.

Dar was unable to capitalize on her reprieve, Annabel Sutherland dismissed in 35th place on 29 (29).

Pakistan eventually fell 101 short of the 337-run target at North Sydney Oval as Australia cruised to a 3-0 whitewash.

Earlier, Australian wicketkeeper Beth Mooney scored a career-best 133 (105) to help the hosts post 9-336, the fourth-highest team total in ODI history.
