Two Pacific Games technical delegates have visited Honiara this month.
Amanda Jenkins, Technical Representative (TD) for Basketball visited the country last week, while TD for Table Tennis Graeme Ireland arrived in the country yesterday.
Both TDs are critical to the preparation and successful delivery of their respective sporting events at this year’s Sol2023 Pacific Games.
Their responsibilities include assessing and approving sports venues and accounts, sports equipment, playing fields, sports officials – ensuring that everything meets Pacific Games standards and requirements.
A large part of the technical representatives’ visits include meeting with all functional areas of the Solomon Islands GOC (Games Organizing Committee), government ministries, sports institutes and sports federations.
Over the past year, the GOC has received and hosted technical delegates for taekwondo and weightlifting.
Jenkins, who is also FIBA’s executive director, said the purpose of the visit was essentially to oversee the preparations for the basketball competitions at this year’s Games.
“The aim of the visit is really to get a better understanding of the preparations and events for the Games and to ensure that our athletes are taken care of and that we put on the best possible events,” he said.
While in Honiara, Jenkins briefly visited the proposed venues for basketball and 3×3 competitions which include; Friendship Hall Multipurpose Sports Complex, HCC Sports Grounds and SIFF Academy at KGVI.
Impressed with the preparations, Jenkins said he is really excited about this year’s Pacific Games basketball competition, adding that he expects a very high level of basketball from all 16 qualifying teams for both men and women.
Men’s qualifying teams include; Guam, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Samoa.
Women’s qualifying teams include; Guam, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Tahiti.
