NASA determined that Asteroid was heading directly for Earth.
NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) spotted the asteroid 2023 BU on January 21, and it is scheduled to catch the planet on Friday, January 27 at 12:30 am.
The rock will travel nearly 2,500 miles above Earth’s surface, making it the fourth closest past and future space rock ever approaching the planet.
For those fearing the worst, CNEOS has eased those fears, stating that even if the asteroid is on its way to hitting Earth it only measures between 12.4 feet and 27.8 feet.
According to NASA space experts, asteroids smaller than 82 feet are more likely to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere rather than crashing into Earth.
However, those who want to watch the asteroid will still be able to see it cross our skies thanks to the Virtual Telescope Project.
The VTP is a group of motorized telescopes located in Ceccano, Italy and accessible online for those keen to see the stars and beyond from the comfort of your home.
Live coverage of the asteroid will start on Thursday 26th January at 7.15pm.
It’s not the only project NASA is working on either. Space experts have also developed a new portable laser to help scientists spot aliens.
Weighing in at 17 pounds, the laser is said to be small enough for astronauts to be able to carry around while on missions, and was developed by the University of Maryland.
Ultraviolet lasers are used to remove particles from planetary materials before they are analyzed in hopes of detecting organic compounds.
