Browse any page of amateur fashion photography, and you’ll quickly find that a lot of the work done is simply pretty girls in average outfits. It seems like a lot of this photography isn’t so much about the clothes as it is about the girls. In this article, we will examine the causes of this phenomenon and answer the question: what is fashion photography exactly?
When I started shooting fashion, I always worked with models who were dressed. It took me a few years at least to try any kind of nudity in my line of work. Even so, it was awkward, and the shooting experience wasn’t enjoyable. However, another creative starts with hot girl in bra photography. This has polarized the photography community for many years now. How far is hot girl in bra fashion photography? I do not think so; in fact, I think that is one of the biggest reasons behind the stigma of fashion photographers.
Most amateur fashion photographers have nothing to do with real fashion photography. The main reason for doing such work is the less likely to meet a hot girl and date her later. I personally know people who will ask girls to participate in photoshoots simply because they want it sexually.
Usually, these are the same people who claim they can’t work if the subject isn’t sexy or attractive. Excuse me, but, if anything screams amateur hour, it has to be this. One of the things that separates the hobbyist from the professional is that a professional can fall in love with almost any subject that is put before them. Just look at Plato’s drawing of Putin. Even at the time of photographing him, Putin had a horrific human rights record. Despite being a human rights defender, Platon still shoots Putin, as a true professional photographer.
I believe it was Peter Lindbergh who said that the moment the model was ready, he fell in love with her, but once the cameras were off, he wasn’t anymore. It’s hard to photograph a subject you don’t like, respect, or admire in one way or another. However, a true professional can find something interesting in everyone. If you’re having trouble with this, I highly recommend taking a look Peter Hurleys Headshot Course is available in our store. We have created a section on finding attractive facial features on the human face, which will be of great help to you with this. It’s not easy; it comes with practice.
Claiming to be a fashion photographer if all you do is photograph beautiful girls in hot outfits is misleading. Entry points to this market segment are practically non-existent. All you need is some basic light setup from YouTube, some cameras and lights, and you’re good to go. Realize the fact that there is no money in this. While I personally don’t like this genre of fashion photography, I won’t judge you if you do. Be honest about your demands from all of this. I’m saying that you’re free to do whatever you want as long as it’s legal, but please give it another name, not fad.
For all of us looking to step up and become true fashion photographers, the first thing to do is stop doing camera club photography. This is where you have to open your mind to a lot of new information.
What Is True Fashion Photography?
There’s a lot of content on YouTube that claims to be fashion, when in reality it’s not. Many of these videos are easily identifiable by their style. Her makeup is usually inspired by a 2009 post on DeviantArt, her lighting is a triple light setup from YouTube, and her skin is so plastic it kills turtles.
All you have to watch are behind the scenes videos from major fashion houses and magazines. There is a lot of this content. I would recommend a maker like Ian Hippolyte, BTS videos from Vogue, Lara Jadeetc. Another great way to see great fashion photography is to look at websites like models.com. Because the gatekeeper protects the platform, the content on it is much more polished and “real”.
Real fashion photography is all about fashion. However, that doesn’t mean that nudity and sexiness don’t have a place in it. However, there is a big difference between Playboy’s and Marie Claire’s photos (even in their nude editions). Nudity itself is just that. However, if it is exalted, and there is meaning behind it, it becomes something more. Another reason for nudity in fashion photography is that it is perhaps one of the best ways to draw attention to an item of clothing or accessory. Male and female nudity have a place in real fashion photography. Take a look at some of Tom Ford’s campaigns and the work of Steven Klein and Steven Meisel.
Unfortunately, there is a dark and disgusting side to fashion photography, and dozens if not hundreds of cases of lawful infringement from all sides are not uncommon. Some nudity is not consensual, and models are sometimes forced to do so, especially early in their careers. Photographers who exploit models in such a way not only damage their reputation but also that of the industry. While there’s nothing wrong with two people meeting on a set and ending up having a romance because they like each other, there’s nothing wrong with one party abusing their power to get intimate.
Closing Mind
Real fashion photography is far from hot girl photography. Personally, my favorite models fall far short of traditional beauty standards. When casting for a personal project, probably the last thing I look for is how hot the model is. Sure, once I had to pick on someone based solely on their bust size, those were outliers, however.
Be honest about your intentions when doing fashion photography. If all you want to do is hot girl photography and they are up for anything you want, then go for it! But for all of us who want to do real fashion photography, this just isn’t the way to go.
