The reunion of ’90s metal icons Pantera was always going to be controversial with some fans because it couldn’t include original members and brothers Dimebag guitarist Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, both deceased. But now, a seven-year-old controversy has caught up with the new iteration of the band, particularly vocalist Philip Anselmo.
Two of Europe’s biggest rock festivals, Rock am Ring and Rock im Park in Germany, have dropped Pantera from their lineups. The withdrawal was decided after intensive conversations spurred by a 2016 onstage incident in which Anselmo threw off the Nazi salute and declared white power during a performance of Panteras hit Walk. The incident took place during a Hollywood Dimebash tribute to Dimebag Darrell.
Immediately after the incident, Anselmo refused to apologize and was thoroughly chastised by fans and musicians in the metal community.
Anselmo then backtracked, saying he was making a drunken inside joke about the white wine being served backstage and reacting to taunts from audience members.
Later, in an apology video posted by Anselmo under Housecore Records, Anselmo said a 1000% apology to anyone who was offended by what I said, because you should have been offended.
The promoters of Rock am Ring and Rock im Park released a statement which read in part: Over the past few weeks we have had many intensive conversations with artists, our partners and you, the fans of the festival, we have continued to face criticism together and decided to drop the band from the program.
The current version of Pantera features Anselmo and original bassist Rex Brown with the Abbott brothers replaced by Zakk Wylde of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society, and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante.
Pantera will be replaced at German festivals by The Foo Fighters, who are still without a drummer after sadly loving beloved fan favorite Taylor Hawkins who passed away in March 2022.
The Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival announced last week that Pantera will be one of the headliners for the 2023 festivals. This year, the festival takes place July 14-16 at the old Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield.
Pantera will headline on July 15, according to a tour announcement from the band. The full Inkcarceration lineup will be announced in early February.
