Winona State football will open the 2023 season at Saginaw Valley State

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University football program has added a non-conference opponent to the WSU 2023 schedule and the Warriors will travel in the first week next fall.

Winona State will take on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday, August 31 at the University Center in Michigan. WSU and SVSU will start at 6pm (EST) in the first week of the opener. The competition will be held at the Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium.

Saginaw Valley State went 8-3 overall in 2022 and earned a 3-3 GLIAC record. SVSU went 4-2 at home last fall and was ranked as high as 17th in the NCAA Division II AFCA Coaches’ Poll. The 2023 matchup will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

In 2022, Winona State advanced to the NCAA Division II football postseason for just the seventh time in program history. Under first-year head coach Brian Bergstrom, WSU went 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC South, earning a share of the division title.
