What do the San Jose Sharks want to trade for Timo Meier?

It sounds like three songs.

What I’m hearing is a first-rounder — and one Class A or two Class B prospects or one good prospect and a young, established NHL player, a source outside the San Jose Sharks organization told San Jose Hockey Now.

These are not three easy pieces to give up on a team.

But Meier is an elite winger: Over the past two seasons, he scored 63 goals, 14th in the NHL, and collected 553 shots, second in the league.

This year, the 26-year-old will score 45 goals, which would be a career high of 35 last season.

Meier also has a power game that should show in the playoffs. In short, the pending RFA is a versatile first-line scorer, which is part of the reason why Pierre LeBrun reports that the request for a new contract starts at least nine.

Elliotte Friedman previously reported that the San Jose Sharks, if they receive a good offer for Meier, would give teams a chance to talk to his agency about an extension.

What would these three pieces look like for a team interested in Meier?

Take the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils, who are reportedly very interested in the San Jose Sharks’ star winger.

What could the Rangers, Sabres, Devils offer Meier?

Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko, despite their struggles early in their NHL careers, fit into the bucket of young established NHL players and have definite upside.

2021 first round pick Luke Hughes is one of the best prospects in the game, a definite grade A.

2021 first-round pick Brennan Othmann is a good prospect, but more of the Class B variety.

Obviously, what each piece is in the Meier restoration depends on the other.

For example, if the Rangers were willing to part with 2020 first overall pick Lafreniere, then the San Jose Sharks probably wouldn’t demand three good pieces back for Meier. The same goes for Luke Hughes.

Not that these teams are necessarily willing to deal likely future core pieces to Meier.

But GM Mike Grier can hope, and he’s hanging onto a good enough player that isn’t a dream.

The trade deadline is March 3. See if teams wait for Meier, one of only a handful of true game changers.
