If there is one quality that individuals should look for in themselves, it is consistent performance in the face of ever-increasing pressure and rapid change. Whether it’s on the sports field or in business, being successful and staying one step ahead of the competition requires a well-thought-out game plan that accurately differentiates what makes some thrive under pressure and others falter.

In the final episode of Torchbearers Inc., powered by AWS and NeoNiche, a table tennis champion and Olympian Manika Batra and Co-Founder & MD of Axio and Ironman Triathlon enthusiast Gaurav Hindusyou get to talk about the importance of setting goals in achieving success.

Making goals achievable

The unpredictable nature of business must be balanced with something outside of business. Choose something that creates balance and focus, explains Gaurav. To him it was sport. What he learned from the Ironman journey is not to give up. Gaurav recalled how he finished the race with a bad leg. If he made it to the end of that race, he could go through some tough days at work.

For India’s top-ranked female table tennis player Manika, sports is a full-time job. Although there is constant pressure in sports, the most important thing is to be confident and remember hard work during training, he believes. There will always be pressure, we have to know how to handle it,he says.

In addition to this, Gaurav talks about a systematic game plan for a fixed period of time, say three months, 12 months or three years. Make sure your timeline and goals are in sync. And be ambitious enough and responsible enough to achieve them,he says.

Manika emphasizes setting both long-term and short-term goals. For example, while his long-term goal is to win an Olympic medal, his short-term goal is to focus on the next tournament.

In Gaurav’s view, one needs to develop three key skills in business – to be calm and confident, to be a quick decision maker and to be able to negotiate.

Strive for discipline

Gaurav learned the importance of mentorship at a young age from his father’s coaching. He has continued the same today by hiring a professional mentor. Alternatively, Manika feels that a coach is very important, but if no one is there to motivate you, motivate yourself.

Both Manika and Gaurav agree that self-discipline is a key quality in achieving success. Discipline is the hardest thing, but the key to success. Strive for discipline in what you do. When you stay disciplined, you open the door to freedom, shared by Gaurav.

In sports, the most important thing is to be disciplined. Be focused and dedicated. Also, keep encouraging everyone as the athletes work hard. Be with them,The doll says.

Gaurav also advises fellow entrepreneurs to find a passion or hobby outside of work, be it art or sports, outside of work that helps balance the stress of business. He also emphasizes achieving a balance between work and private life.

When talking about choosing the right partner to help you scale and succeed, Gaurav draws parallels with AWS. AWS is a service provider that truly empowers you. How can you trust a partner who doesn’t sit in your office every day? Someone who is invisible. We don’t see people in AWS. As long as things go well, we trust the person. When things go badly, we wonder if the person is at work. The people who stand by you when things go wrong are the ones you never want to lose for the rest of your life. This is how we feel about everyone,he explains.
