The Hokies host Mercer on Sunday in a noon game

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech lacrosse returns to Thompson Field for its second home game of the week when Mercer visits on Sunday at noon.

ABOUT HOCKEY…

The Hokies are off to a 1-1 start for the fourth year in a row and are aiming for a 2-1 record for the fourth time as well. In its first two games, Tech has registered strong outings from its veteran defense and freshman goalie Jocelyn Torres. Against two strong opponents in VCU and No. 12 JMU, Tech has an 8.00 goals-against average.

ABOUT THE BEARS…

Mercer was ranked first in the Big South in the league’s preseason poll. Three of the team’s seniors (Chloe Schaeffer, Lyndsey Lewis, Emma Pizzo) were also named to the preseason All-Conference team.

In 2022, Mercer clinched the Big South Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

SERIES

Sunday’s game will be the first meeting between Mercer and Virginia Tech. In fact, the Hokies are just the third ACC opponent to face Mercer since its program began in 2015, joining Louisville and North Carolina. Tech is 29-4 against current teams from the Big South. Its last loss to a Big South opponent came at High Point on Feb. 20, 2015.

Virginia Tech boasted the best field goal percentage in NCAA Division I last season – completing 287 of 307 attempts (93.5%). Through two games this season, Tech is 32-of-33 (97.0%).
