Mike Pence Shades Donald Trump With Line About ‘Respect’

[ad_1]

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Friday reiterated his belief that the GOP will have “better options than my former running mate” Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

“I think the times call for different leadership,” Pence told NBC News’ Ali Vitali, in another clear distancing of himself from his former boss.

Voters told Pence they wanted “a return to the policies of the Trump-Pence administration,” he said.

But “the next thing I hear … is that they want to see us and our politics go back to the kind of civility and respect that Americans show each other every day,” he added, a clear referring to Trump’s clearly uncivil discourse.

Trump declared his third consecutive run for president in November.

Since then he has been in the race of former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

Pence has yet to officially launch a campaign.

“We listen, we reflect, we talk to companies,” he told Vitali. “By spring, our family hopes to have a very clear definition of our role.”

Relations between Trump and Pence soured after the latter refused to overturn the 2020 election results, prompting angry Trump supporters to storm the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, to call for the execution of Pence.

Pence said he had not spoken to Trump recently.

The former veep is currently fighting a grand jury subpoena for the Justice Department’s investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn the election results.
