The Eagles finished eighth after the first round at the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC. – The FGCU women’s golf team is tied for eighth after Monday’s opening round of the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate.

The Eagles are in a five-set tie with Akron, Morehead State, Northern Colorado and North Dakota State, all of whom posted 302 team scores entering the tournament. Round 2 will be played on Tuesday, and the final round will be played on Wednesday. .

“We didn’t do very well today, but there’s a lot of golf left,” said the FGCU head women’s golf coach. Shannon Sykora.

FGCU is just five strokes behind fifth-place East Carolina and 10 shots behind third-place UNCG and Illinois-Chicago. No. 77 James Madison leads the tournament with an even-par 285.

East Carolina’s Oda Sofie Kilsti, UNC Asheville’s Madyson Gold and UNCG’s Ava Romfo are tied for first on the individual leaderboard at 2-under 69.

2 years old over 73 years old, second student Posie Farrelly (Lutz, Fla./George Steinbrenner HS)pace FGCU’s starting five by setting up a 19th title heading into Tuesday’s moving day. Farrelly’s opening round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.

Freshman Grace Rigby-Walden(Gerrards Cross, England/The Chalfonts Community College) is the next closest Eagle in the individual standings and is 32nd at four over 74. Freshman Louisiana Gauthier (Canelones, Uruguay/Stella Maris College)leads all Eagles with three made birdies.

FGCU leads the 17-team field in combined par-5 scoring — and has been able to reach six under so far.

After a highly successful decade at the helm of Barry University, Shannon Sykorawas was named FGCUwomen’s head golf coach on June 16, 2022. During his career with Barry, the Buccaneers won the 2017 NCAA Division II national title, finished second in 2014 and finished third. 2013 and 2022. Sykoraled Barry has 28 tournament wins in a decade as a head coach, including four Division I tournament wins. She has produced five WGCAAll-America First Team selections, nine WGCAScholar All-Americans, one honorable mention All-American, the 2013 NCAA Division II Individual National Champion and the only D-II player to compete in the inaugural Augusta Women’s Amateur Series.

FGCU teams have won an incredible 96 conference regular season and tournament championships in just over 15 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just over 11 post-DI seasons, the Eagles have had a total of 48 teams or individuals compete in the NCAA Championships. In 2022, the men’s golf team became the first program to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Another milestone was reached over the last seven semesters (Fall 2019 Fall 2022) when all 15 programs achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Eagles also served an all-time record 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
