Longwood Tennis comes up short in Home Big South competition

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood men’s and women’s tennis host Big South opponents today as the men welcome Presbyterian and the women welcome Charleston Southern. Both teams lost their respective doubleheaders today 7-0 and 5-0.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN:

Longwood women’s tennis (6-11) started the day’s matches in doubles, and eventually dropped the opening point in singles. The No. 1 and No. 3 duos both fell 6-3 to their Charleston Southern (13-5) opponents, while the team Maria Saez and by Nina Hederich match no. 2 was abandoned.

The Buccaneers got the second point at No. 1 singles, but had to fight back to get the third. Maria Saez and Charleston Southern’s Amila Jusufbegovic battled in the third set at No. 2, but CSU prevailed.

Marina Skegro’s win Karina Rizvanova at No. 3 confirmed the Bucs’ doubleheader win, and as a result, Nos. 4 and 5 fell short despite both. Sofia Marchetta and Victoria Czerny each to the third set.

On the men’s side, Longwood (5-8) dropped the opening doubleheader to PC (11-9) after falling at No. 1 and No. 2. However, the dual Luis Reyes and Yoav Weinberg earned the win at No. 3 despite dropping the overall doubles.

The Blue Hose picked up wins at all six starters to pick up their second Big South win of the year. Although PC ended up winning every match, several Lancers had respectable performances, including a tiebreak loss in the second set from the No. 1 seed. Guillermo Cagigas and a crazy match that went all the way to the tenth point in the third set from Timéo Puech at #3.
