It was the second meet record by a Cardinal athlete Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Udido Onwuzurike won the 100 in the season in 10.07, tying his yearling to meet the standard. Onwuzurike made his outdoor debut of the season and still has his best 200 event on Saturday.
Hicks, the reigning NCAA cross-country champion, made his outdoor season debut by finishing with a killer kick that gave him the win in the final meters in 27:57.47. Leonard Korir’s 2016 mark dropped to 27:58.65.

Stanford teammate Ky Robinsonwho shared the pace with Hicks for most of the last half of the race, was third in 27:58.74. Devin Hart was eighth with a time of 28.07.64 and jumped to number 6 on Stanford’s all-time list of performers. Hicks and Robinson are already 2nd and 4th with even faster times. With Cole Sproutwho didn’t run, four current Stanford runners are now among the school’s top six all-time in the 10,000.
The goal was just to run times that would comfortably qualify them for the NCAA West Prelims. But with the pace so strong, even with Alabama’s Victor Kiprop taking the lead late in the race, Hicks still found himself within striking distance and couldn’t resist the smell of victory. Hicks pushed hard out of the final turn and caught Kiprop just before the line.
The race was one of Stanford’s great long-distance performances. In the women’s 10,000 series Grace Connolly was 29th in a very fast leg and still moved up to No. 8 in school history by running 33:19.28 for a huge personal best by 50 seconds.
A moment later, Audrey DaDamio made her debut at this distance and ran 33:21.12 to rank 10th on the same list. In all, a remarkable 21 women broke 33 minutes between the two sections. Before Friday, only four college women had done so this year.

Juliette Whittaker, the NCAA indoor runner-up in the 800 and anchor of the winning medley relay, made his collegiate outdoor debut. Whittaker was second in the women’s 400 in 53.74, a PB of 0.81. Cydney Wright behind 53.78.
John Kroeger also had a big day, earning a lifetime best in the long jump of 24-1 (7.36 meters) while finishing second in the college division.
In the women’s 100 series Alexa Rossumthe first Pac-12 women’s track athlete this season, was second in 11:45.
The activity continues on Saturday from 9 am
