To that end, Cyrus Vance Jr., the Manhattan district attorney who preceded Mr. Bragg and whose office led most of the investigation into Mr. Bragg’s business practices. Trumps, told NBCs Meet the Press that he was upset that Mr. Trump has been attacking not only Mr. Bragg but also to the judge in the case.

Mr. Vance said, I think if I were his attorney and believe me, no one called to ask for my advice, I would remember that I had not committed any other criminal offense like obstructing government administration, interfering, in by threat or otherwise, by the operation of the government.

Mr. said little. Bragg publicly about the investigation or the criticisms hurled at him by Republicans. Last week, his office, in a letter to congressional Republicans who threatened to investigate the actions of the district attorney’s office, said accusations that the investigation was politically motivated were unfounded. The letter, signed by the office’s general counsel, Leslie B. Dubeck, said the charges against Mr. Trump were brought by the citizens of New York, doing their civic duty as members of a grand jury.

Mr. already knows Bragg is expected to hold a news conference at some point on Tuesday, Mr. Trump has scheduled himself for that evening, when he plans to return to Mar-a-Lago. He is also expected to deliver remarks to supporters at his club, similar to his event in November announcing his third run as president.

Some Trump allies have made it clear that they want any protests in New York to remain civil, especially since Mr. Trump has called for his supporters to protest. His longest-serving adviser, Roger J. Stone Jr., urged supporters to be peaceful and legal if they demonstrated at a planned rally outside Trump Tower on Monday morning.
