WWE was forced to apologize on Friday after using archival photos from the Auschwitz concentration camp in a fight promotional video for WrestleMania.
The promotional video was released last Saturday to announce an upcoming fight between father and son duo Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio and featured footage of the guard tower and fence of Auschwitz, a camp where around 1.1 million people lost their lives in the Holocaust.
Part of the promotional video was shared on Twitter via @fusionaddict, which shows footage of Dominik Mysterio being arrested. The video then cuts to Mysterio saying, I served hard and I survived, as photos of a prison cell and Auschwitz guard towers are shown.
The Auschwitz memorial called out WWE for using the footage on Wednesday, calling the decision immodest.
The fact that the Auschwitz image was used to promote a WWE match is hard to classify as an editing error. Exploiting the site which has become the symbol of a huge human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all Auschwitz victims, the organization wrote on Twitter.
On Friday, WWE apologized, saying they were completely unaware of the situation.
We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned about it, it was taken down immediately, the organization told The Washington Post.
According to the Post, WWE edited the piece to replace the concentration camp footage for later broadcasts and reruns.
