We orient your entire medical education experience around these characteristics – we call them the 5 principles of PURCHASING.

Dig deep into health issues in the western mass

You will learn to apply population health principles health problems— and the underlying social determinants of health — common to our underserved urban and rural communities.

Learn and work directly with community organizations

Baystate Community College– non-clinical community members who live, work, and pray in the communities Baystate Health serves – bring the lived experience of community residents to all aspects of your education.

You will collaborate with community organizations over the four years through your population and community health clerkship, electives, capstone projects, and other initiatives.

PURCH’s small class size of approximately 25 medical students makes Brightwood House an exceptionally close learning community whose faculty and students are guided by the PURCH principles in how they teach, learn, connect and lead.
