NOKOMIS, Fla. (WWSB) – UPDATE: Two vehicles collided on I-75 near mile marker 196 southbound at 7:15 pm Sat., April 15, resulting in two deaths and two injuries.
The at-fault driver, Donald Johnsen, 59, of Naples, fled in a hit and run vehicle and was later located on Laurel Rd. and placed under arrest for leaving the scene of a crash involving two deaths and DUI manslaughter.
The two vehicles were driving side by side in the inner lanes of the highway, south of mile marker 196. Johnsen swerved right into the second vehicle and struck the left side of the car. The second vehicle spun, traveling on the west shoulder of the grass and overturned.
The two rear passengers, ages 50 and 64, were ejected from the car. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was pronounced dead after being transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The driver and front seat passenger, ages 59 and 63, were also taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
This case remains under investigation.
