Baseball Welcomes Yale to Alumni Weekend / Lasorda Field Recognition Ceremony

Philadelphia – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team has a chance to extend its Ivy League lead this weekend in front of its loyal alumni. The Quakers, who lead the Ivy League with a 9-3 record, host Yale in a three-game tilt this weekend while celebrating their alumni and Tommy Lasorda Field.

Tommy Lasorda Field Celebration and Alumni Weekend

The University of Pennsylvania will recognize alumni and contributors to the Meiklejohn Stadium renovation project in a ceremony before the first game of the series. It starts at 11:10.

Series: Yale

The Quakers are 97-116-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, but have a record of 57-44-1 when playing in Philadelphia. Since Coach Yurkow took over as head coach prior to the 2014 season, the Quakers own a 10-9 record against the Bulldogs along with a 16-11 advantage since 2010.

The Quakers have won their last 6 games and 11 of their last 12. During that run, the pitching staff is holding the opposition to 3.16 runs per game. On the season, the bats are averaging 7.41 runs per game and the pitchers are averaging 4.28 runs per game, with the team scoring exactly 100 more runs than allowed.

Due to some unearned runs and games shortened by the mercy rule, the Quakers staff has a 3.77 ERA, best in the Ivy League by more than a run and a half and 16th lowest in the nation. They also have the nation’s 15th highest strikeout/9 inning ratio (10.6) thanks in large part to their starting trio. Owen Coady, Cole Sapphireand Ryan Dromboski. All of the three-headed monsters rank in the top three in ERA among Ivy League hurlers, and all are in the top four and top five in batting average and strikeouts.

Wyatt Henseler is currently on a 15-game hitting streak, bringing his season average to .309. Among all Ivy League players, he ranks 2nd in Home Runs with 11, 5th in slugging at .618 and 6th in OPS at .991.

The offense has been a triple machine this year as well, with three Quakers sitting atop the Ivy League triples standings (Jackson Appel with four Cole Palis and Davis Baker with three each). Their 0.62 threes per game currently leads all of Division I.

Yale preview

Yale has played in the Ivy League with a 7-5 record and this season with an overall record of 13-17. In their final Ivy League series, they traveled north to Hanover and swept Dartmouth. They are currently tied for 4th place (and the final spot in the Ivy League playoffs) with Princeton, who they face next weekend.

With the bats they are led by Davis Hanson and Jimmy Chatfield hitting .316 and .315. Chatfield also leads the Bulldogs with four home runs and 22 walks.

Colton Shaw and Reid Easterly have each made more than six starts and thrown more than 50 innings.
