Women’s tennis downed Misericordia 5-1 to win the MAC Freedom Championship

EDGEWATER, NJ (April 29, 2023) The #1 ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team defeated #2 Misericordia 5-1 in the MAC Freedom Championship at the Edgewater Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Graduate student Agatha Malinowski was named tournament MVP as the Ducks won their second straight MAC Freedom championship. Stevens won all three doubles matches, giving them the momentum to go on and win the championship. Despite the situation, those present could feel that it was much closer than the box score suggests. With the Ducks leading 4-1, Misericordia led in the remaining four singles matches, but the Ducks eventually pulled out the victory.

Malinowski and the first year Stephanie Untermeyer won the first match of the day 8-5 over Emily Brecker and Brianna Pizzano. The duo fell to 5-3, but rattled off eight straight games to take the set, Sophomore Emma Eguia and the first year Anya Sharma also picked up a big win on the second line with an 8-3 win over Erin Cridge and Lydia Barbour. Junior Polina Odintseva paired with a second-year student Isabella the woman completed the doubles with a quick 8-1 win over Cassie Benderavich and Hailey Loughlin.

In singles, Eguia grabbed a quick 6-0, 6-1 win in four straight over Loughlin. Misericordia then picked up the win in the fifth to get their first point of the day. After the first set, Odintseva led 1-0 together with the senior Juliette Marchisio won his semi-final match 7-6 (9-7) and took the lead in his match. Untermeyer and Malinowski both went 1-0. In the second set, Untermeyer and Malinowski tied their match, while Odintseva fell 6-1. In the sixth row, Marchisio defeated Lauren Visalli 6-4 in the second set to win the title for the Ducks.
