Why is the male beauty at the Met Gala so good

The hangover has worn off, the carpet has been rolled up, and the world’s most fashionable cockroach has long since disappeared (or met its end, if reports are true).

The 2023 Met Gala is over, and you’ve probably seen a million pictures of the incredible Doja Cat or Anok Yai. But we’re more interested in dissecting the male appearance, and as male beauty obsessives, makeup and some of that is really good.

Vogue credited the inclusion of progressive male looks on the runway in 2010 to a suitable increase in riskier ensembles for men at the Met Ball, and as men feel more comfortable expressing themselves through fashion on the red carpet, we’re starting to see more experimentation. on the makeup front as well.

And mark our words: even if a male celebrity isn’t wearing eye-catching eye shadow, he will be wearing makeup (see our stories about skin tone if you want to dabble in a tinted foundation that can’t be used to perfect your skin).

Let’s address Karl Lagerfeld’s problematic themes, as many attendees did, and focus instead on the brushes of the extraordinary makeup artist who came to New York to help piece this creative vision together.

Alton Mason

Arguably one of the strongest ball looks, inspired by the classic Chanel bridal. Alton Mason has also recently been in for a stunning Valentino Beauty campaign, so it’s no surprise that he’s sporting a full face of Valentino makeup.

Artist Taylor Chanel used the Valentino Color-Flip Eyeshadow Palette to create a subtle smoky eye, topped with the iridescent Dreamdust 01 Silver Spark shimmer eyeshadow, and finished with Chanel pearls housed in a corner in a light that catches everything perfectly beneath the white tulle. veil.

Conan Grey

Resplendent in a pearl studded suit with Karl’s trademark high starched collar, all from Balmain, singer Conan Gray looked dapper.

Make-up artist Melissa Dezarate lent in to regalness by giving skin a pale, powdery Rococo finish, and the lightest touch of matte pink blush on the apples of the cheeks.

Manu Rios

Though swoon party Manu Rios opts for a more subtle beauty look, we think it’s worth understanding what goes into enhanced red carpet skin looks for men.

We spoke with her make-up artist Bosco Montesinos who gave us low-key instructions, most of which revolved around prepping the skin, using Shiseido Vital Perfection Express Lifting and Firming Eye MaskThat Foreo UFO Device 2 and Shiseido face cream for deep hydration.

Armani Luminous Silk Concealer was used to correct and brighten, and skin was finished with Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Powder Bronzer, Armani Neo Nude A-Blush and a few taps of Dior’s highlighter balm.

Jordan Roth

Jordan is obviously a huge Lagerfelds fan (that’s a joke he wears a giant fan inspired by one of Karl’s most iconic accessories). But this stunning ensemble and makeup look is no joke.

Roth wore a floor-length skirt composed of 480,000 black micro-glass trumpet beads, topped by a fan made of black glass mirror by Schiaparelli that hid parts of Roth’s face modestly.

From behind fan sweeps, temples graze with smoky pink blush and purple/rust eye duochrome by artist Sil Bruinsma, finished off with a jewel like crimson lipstick (the shade is Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick #1996 Rouge Libre). Perfection.

Jared Leto

Yes he comes in a giant cat suit; no, I’m not going to start lyrical about the beauty of cats. But underneath the cat suit, Leto wore a striking archival embellishment collection from Karl Lagerfeld’s Fall 2009 runway collection, paired with bold kohled eyes and a liquid silver lid by artist Petros Petrohilos.

It’s a little rock n roll for our tastes, but it suits Leto perfectly, and he wears it well.

Lil Nas X

It’s like Pat McGrath seeing her work on red crystal-encrusted Doja Cat at the Schiaparellis Paris Fashion Week show in January and saying MORE!

This Lil Nas X look took nine hours, thousands of three-dimensional crystals and pearls, and groups of people flying around the world to find all the pieces, McGrath explained to Vogue.

Silver body paint from head to toe, a Dior thong and a piece of 25-year-old Austrian lace forming the base of the Choupette-inspired mask completed the look. Amazing. Iconic. And a nightmare to get rid of.
