Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan remained on high alert for aftershocks and rain after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit the area on Friday, killing one person and injuring 22 others.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of the possibility of strong aftershocks about a week after the initial earthquake Friday afternoon, which registered a 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in the city of Suzu on the tip of the Noto Peninsula. .

Xinhua reported that a 65-year-old man was killed in Suzhou in Friday’s earthquake after falling from a ladder and 22 others were injured.

More than 50 aftershocks had already been recorded in the region by 8 a.m. local time, including a 5.8-magnitude quake on Friday evening, the association said, warning that heavy rains could lead to landslides in areas where earthquakes have loosened the ground.

The meteorological agency said the prefecture could see up to 30 mm of rain per hour from Saturday evening to early Sunday, with 120 mm expected for the Noto region in the 24 hours until 6 a.m. Sunday.

After receiving reports of collapsed buildings, local authorities began assessing the damage caused by the earthquakes.
