Terrace Cricket Club is seeking city support for a cricket pitch as membership grows

Terrace Cricket Club has grown to three teams and is actively seeking support from the City of Terrace for its own cricket ground.

Currently, the club uses the parking lot at the Skeena Valley Guru Nanak Brotherhood Society temple in town for practices and tournaments. The club started three years ago with just 16 players and has since grown to 50-60 players from a variety of backgrounds, including international students, permanent residents and workers.

With 15 players in each team, the club will have four teams in the upcoming tournament. The players are responsible for their own cricket equipment and jerseys, but the club is struggling to find a suitable pitch.

Terrace Cricket Club Coordinator Sukhjinder Grewal has requested land from the City of Terrace and specified that a flat, concrete oval and circle in the middle and surrounding grass or concrete extending 60-65 meters on each side is required.

The club has not received a response from the city to their request.

“We can’t do everything ourselves,” said Grewal, stressing the need for local government support. He pointed out that the lack of infrastructure hampers the club’s ability to hold tournaments, but this could change if the city provides land for cricket grounds.

Grewal, a former Indian cricketer, is passionate about bringing sports to Terrace and promoting community involvement.

Cities like Vancouver, Winnipeg and Calgary already have cricket grounds, and Grewal believes that having a field in Terrace could help bring the community together.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by newcomers to the city who work multiple jobs, making it difficult to create community and implement such projects.

The club focuses on motivating its players and promoting healthy competition.

“We’re very competitive,” Grewal said.

While they wait for the right field, the players continue to compete against each other.
