New York-based designer Peter Do will oversee the Helmut Lang men’s and women’s collections, starting May 15. Her debut collection, spring 2024, will be presented during New York Fashion Week later this year.
Since launching his namesake label in 2018, Do has quickly emerged as a rising star in the industry, known for his sharp tailoring and modern workwear. As a student at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, her 2014 graduation collection won her the LVMH prize for young fashion designers. Soon after, she was hired by Celine, under Phoebe Philo, and also designed for Derek Lam.
In his new role, Do would lend this credibility to the ailing Helmut Lang brand, which had seen a slew of designers since its founder left the label in 2005. In 2009, the brand was purchased by owner Uniqlo Fast Retailing in 2009, as part of from the acquisition of Theory by a Japanese retailer. In 2018, it restructured its business, effectively cutting its North American sales in half.
Do will remain in New York as well as continue in his role as head of his own label.
“(Do’s) clear and innovative approach to design is very much in line with the brand’s ethos and heritage,” said Helmut Lang chief executive Dinesh Tandon in a statement. “Her experience with luxury fashion houses and well-known labels made her a natural choice for this role.”
