The Spiders Rally failed against VCU

RICHMOND, Va. Richmond Baseball rallied from behind to tie the game in the eighth, but fell to VCU 9-8 on Saturday at The Diamond. The Atlantic 10 Conference series finale takes place Sunday at 1:00 PM at The Diamond on ESPN+.

Richmond (22-25, 11-8 A-10) opened the game quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning. With two outs, the Spiders plated a single, hit a pitch and back-to-back walks to force the game in the first inning. Jake Elbeery then plated two runs on a base hit to left center for a 3-0 UR lead.

VCU (24-27, 10-10 A-10) got on the board in the second inning, scoring five runs and two outs in the inning on a UR starter Jeremy Neff. Neff was lifted in the third after VCU tacked on three more runs to go up 8-3.

Argomaniz by Brenden got the final two outs of the third and then tossed five scoreless frames, working around three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

UR chipped away at VCU’s lead, getting a run in the fourth, sixth, seventh and two in the eighth.

Johnny Hipsman extended his hitting streak to 20 games with an RBI base hit in the fourth. Jared Sprague-Lott scored from the start Jordan Jaffe double in the sixth before Elbeery scored Chase Conklin’s second hit of the game in the seventh. Jaffe launched the 11^th eighth home run of the season, picks up Sprague-Lott to tie the game at 8-all.

Argomaniz struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth earlier Alden Mathes came from the center to take over. Mathes struck out the first two batters he faced, but gave up the game-winning base hit to left, allowing an inherited runner to score.
