Chelsea Football Club will appoint former Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino as its new coach.
The 51-year-old will permanently succeed Graham Potter, who was fired at the start of April after less than seven months in charge of the club, Sky Sports News understands.
Frank Lampard’s role as caretaker manager will also end at the end of this season.
Upon assuming this role, Mr. Pochettino will cease his work.
Despite spending £600m in recent transfer windows, Chelsea are currently in the bottom half of the Premier League and will finish the season without a trophy.
The team will also not play in the European Championship next season.
Sky Sports’ Paul Gilmour said the selection of the Argentine was “surreal” but that Mr Pochettino “knows how to bring a group of players together. He’s very much a person, someone who can motivate and work with what he’s got”.
Pochettino has been out of work since PSG sacked him last summer after 18 months in charge.
Prior to that, he coached Tottenham, Chelsea’s London rival, for five years until November 2019, but failed to win a cup for the club located in north London.
Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville said the right choice had been made, given the profile of players Chelsea had signed.
“They have to appoint a manager who will inherit such a team as they have – a lot of them are young – and I think that guy is Mauricio Pochettino,” he said.
