UAA honors five men’s tennis All-Association teams

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men’s tennis team had five members who recognized University Athletics Association across UAA last week. The first year Tommy Harrison / London, Englandwas a first-team selection at #2 singles, while Harrison and junior partner Dylan Walters / Baltimore, Marylandwere second-team honorees at No. 1 doubles.Three judges received honorable mention: first year Alex Merson / Palisades Park, New Jersey, number 4 singles; senior Hunter Levine / Weston, Florida, #2 in doubles and #6 in singles; and older Simon Kauppila / Chesterfield, Missouriwith the number 2 doubles.

Harrison finished 15-10 in singles and 10-8 in doubles this season. He was 9-8 at No. 2 and had one win at No. 3. Harrison’s nine wins at No. 2 were the most by a UAA player against Division III opponents. Four of Harrison’s 10 dual match wins came in three sets. He also picked up the win in Judges’ 5-1 win over Carnegie Mellon in the UAA tournament, helping Brandeis finish fifth.

As a team, Harrison and Walters ranked eighth in the Northeast Region in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s final regular season rankings. They went 13-7 on the season, the second-best record on the team, while their 11 wins against Division III opponents were tied for the most in the UAA. Harrison and Walters went 2-1 in the UAA tournament, including an 8-5 win over top-ranked Emory in the Atlantic South in the opening round, the Judges’ only point against the Eagles.

Merson ranked second among UAA players with eight wins against Division III opponents at No. 4. He was 12-5 overall in dual matches last season, tops among umpires. Along with his 9-5 record at No. 4, he also went 3-0 in three matches at No. 3.

Levine was 8-3 in duals last season, including a perfect 6-0 at #6 singles. He was 0-1 at No. 4 and 2-2 at No. 5. Partnership with Shop At No. 2 doubles, the pair posted a 19-8 record for the top UAA doubles team against Division III opponents. They were a team-best 14-6 in dual meets, including 12-5 against Division III opponents. The pair won their last two matches at the UAA tournament, with the judges placing fifth.

As a team for the first year under the head coach Christo SchultzThe Brandeis men’s tennis team finished 28th at 13-7^th in Division III in the latest ITA National Rankings and eighth in the Northeast Region. The Judges will return all but two of their starters for the 2023-24 season.
