Payas and Ankur make their presence felt

Itanagar: Payas Jain, the No. 1 seed, made short work of his opponents Tandin Tshering of Bhutan and Baniya Bishwo of Nepal as the Indian won both 3-0 to top Group 1 and enter the U Series main draw. 19 boys singles in South Asian Youth Table Tennis at Dorjee Khandu Indoor Stadium on Tuesday.

His footsteps followed and Ankur Bhattacharjee, another Indian in the fray, entered the second phase of the singles event. He also beat Maldvies’ Sujau Mohamed Thabini 3-0 and Sri Lanka’s Gesandu Peiris in Group 2.

From Group 3, Bangladesh’s Ridoy Mohutasin Ahmed played comfortably against Utam Kafley of Bhutan and Batagoda Gamage of Sri Lanka, beating their rivals 3-0 and 3-1. Bangladesh’s Bawam Ramhim Lian won Group 4 with a 3-2 win over Khalid Akhyar Ahmed of Maldives and a 3-0 win over Nepal’s Sujan Gadal.

Nepal’s Baniya Bishwo, Sri Lanka’s Gasandu Peiris, Sri Lanka’s Batagoda Gamage and Maldives’ Khalid Akhyar Ahmed from the four groups grabbed the second spots to qualify for the knockout stage starting tomorrow.

In the under-19 girls category, India’s Yashashwini Ghorpade and Suhana Saini took Pools 1 and 2, while Maldives’ Fathimath Dheema Ali led Pool 3 to enter the second stage draw. Two girls from Sri Lanka, Lesanya Sethumdee Kulappuwawadu and Diwya Dharani Gamage and Nepal’s Evana Thapa Magar followed the leaders into the playoffs. In Under-15 Boys’ Singles, India’s Pradivadhi Bhayankan and Priyanuj Bhattacharya led Groups 1 and 2, while Bangladesh’s Habib Abul Hashem topped Group 3. Others who joined them were Sri Lanka’s Mohamed Akram, Nepal’s Saurav Khadka and Janith Batuge. from Sri Lanka in the main series.
