Riot police are on the scene of a major incident in Cardiff after a serious incident occurred in the Ely area of the city.
Emergency services reported being at the scene of the incident on Snowden Road on Monday night, which later escalated into what police describe as a “widespread disturbance”.

A large crowd of people, many wearing face masks and balaclavas, gathered and were seen throwing objects at the police and their cars.

The road is closed between Wilson Road and Jackson Road and police have asked members of the public to avoid the area.

Pictures from social media show a police car with its front window smashed and side mirrors broken.
A group of people was seen hurling a door towards riot police, and a car was also set on fire.
South Wales Police said shortly after 6pm they had received a report of a serious traffic collision on Snowden Road.
And the police responded to this collision already when the officers arrived, and we have to make sure that the collision that happened in the evening is effectively investigated.
“Officers remain on site to deal with widespread disturbance. Once again, we urge anyone involved or watching to leave immediately. We understand the concern of local residents and ask you to stay home.”
A resident told ITV News, “It’s terrible, I have my son who lives in Stanway Road with four children and I had to call my daughter in Stanway Place where it all started. I’m worried – I’m going to be up all night.”
“I haven’t seen anything like this for many years – not since the last riot here about 20 years ago.”

Cardiff Bus said its services had been diverted due to the ongoing incident.
In a later update, the police said: “Emergency services are still at the scene. It is important that people avoid the area so we can deal effectively with this incident.”
