A Windsor father says he was frustrated with his 12-year-old son, who is accused of assaulting him during a hockey game in London, Ont.
The father, who CTV News is not naming to protect the identities of the youths involved, says it happened in the final game of the U14 3-on-3 hockey tournament on Family Day weekend.
At the end of the game, one of the kids looked behind another kid, which started a fight between the three kids on the ice, he says. Three kids from their benches jumped on their boards to go after three.
The father says that the players from both benches went on the ice in a fight, as a result of which an ambulance was called for one child, who according to him got a concussion.
He rated about 24 players on the ice during the scrimmage. He says at first that his son stayed on the bench until he went to defend one of his smaller teammates involved in the melee.
At that time, my son left the bench and went after the one kid who hurt his friend, the father says.
He says it wasn’t mean. As far as he knew, his son was the only accused.
Did you have to go that far? Absolutely not. It should never have gotten this far. I think we could have done a better job as the parents who are on the bench, the refs who were on the floor, but when they all fight, it’s a full game. Everyone is there, they all participate. (The victim) willingly participated.
About two weeks later, he says, the London police called and asked for a statement about what happened.
He (the police) says very well that the parents of the injured child in the other group want to press charges, he says.
About four weeks later, she says, Windsor police showed up at her door.
He came to the house and we went through a bunch of paperwork and in the end they wanted him to plead guilty and I said no and we couldn’t do a diversion program.
She says she was frustrated with the situation when her son was officially charged.
This is gross, this is crazy, I can’t believe you’re doing this. I said she is 12 years old. I can’t even believe you can charge a 12 year old for this, this happens every day on ice rinks.
The incident is allegedly captured on video, but the father says he hasn’t seen it.
CTV News Windsor contacted London police about the incident.
“As the accused person is apparently under the age of 18 and several media outlets are aware of the person’s identity, we are unable to provide any specific information about the investigation under the provisions of the Youth Offenses Act,” London said in a statement. Police.
The father says his son attended London police headquarters on May 17 to be fingerprinted.
The trial date for the case is May 29 in London.
