Three serious attacks at Celtic fans’ Premier League celebration

Three people were seriously assaulted as thousands of Celtic fans celebrated lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy.

Supporters gathered at Glasgow Cross city center on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the 31-year-old man was in a serious condition at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after the attack.

Two other men, aged 33 and 19, were taken to hospital after being assaulted in separate incidents.

They have since been fired.

Police Scotland said officers were forced to intervene to stop the situation escalating.

Ten people were arrested for a range of offences, including assault, public disorder and assaulting a police officer.

Another eight people were given fixed fines.

Police confirmed that 18 people suffered minor injuries, mostly due to intoxication, and no police were injured.

All reported cases are still under investigation.

Supt Gerry Corrigan said: “Working with partners, there was a proportionate policing plan in place which facilitated the gathering, prioritized public safety and sought to minimize disruption to businesses and communities.

“There was an unbearable amount of anti-social behavior and incidents of disturbance throughout the day.

“Police officers took swift and decisive action to prevent these from escalating.”

The disturbance came after Parkhead beat Aberdeen 5-0.

A major clean-up operation was completed on Sunday after parties left litter all over Glasgow city centre.

Plastic bags, bottles and cans were littered on the streets after the crowd was cleared.

The council worked with the police before the match and waste staff have since collected the rubbish.

Celtic had already sealed their fate as champions before the match with Aberdeen kicked off at 12.30pm.

The league was settled with a win at Tynecastle in early May.

The post-match celebrations in 2022 saw flares and smoke bombs, but according to the police, there were no serious incidents or disturbances.

Glasgow City Council has been approached for comment.
