Virginia Men’s Tennis | Ryan Goetz was named the best player in the ITA Atlantic region

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association today (June 6) announced the recipients of the 2023 Division I Mens Regional Awards. Each year, the ITA recognizes coaches and players for their excellence on the field and in their communities throughout the season.

For the third straight year, Virginia head coach Andres Pedroso was named the Wilson ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, while associate head coach Scott Brown was voted the region’s top assistant coach. Ryan Goetz was named the regions senior player of the year.

Goetz helped lead the Cavaliers to their second straight NCAA title and third straight ACC title, including winning the conference title game against Duke. The ITA Doubles All-American was a 5-8 seed at the NCAA Doubles Championship this year and also earned All-ACC honors in doubles. He posted a 27-5 record in singles, including 23-3 in the spring. He received All-NCAA Tournament Team honors at No. 4. He finished his collegiate career with a 109-39 singles record and an 86-40 doubles record.

Goetz is the fourth Virginia player to earn the honor, joining Ryan Shane (2016), Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (2017) and Carl Sderlund (2021).

Brown and Pedroso guided Virginia to its second straight NCAA championship and a 30-4 record, including their third straight 12-0 mark in the conference schedule. The team won 22 straight games to end the season. In addition to Goetz, they also mentored Iaki Montes and Chris Rodeschi to All-America honors this season.

Selected from the 12 regional winners of each honor, the national award winners will be announced next Monday, June 12.
