Donald Trump impeachment presents other Republican candidates in 2024 with a serious problem, writes US Editor Nick Allen.

Most sided with the former president, knowing that criticizing him over his handling of classified documents would damage their own position in the polls.

Ron DeSantis, his chief rival, condemned a Justice Department weapon of the Democrat administration, using the same language as Mr Trump.

Vivek Ramaswamy, held a press conference outside the courthouse, and called on all Republican candidates to promise a pardon to Mr Trump if they were to become president.

But cracks began to appear in the united front. Nikki Haley condemned the prosecutorial overreach but also said, if the accusation is true, Mr Trump has been very reckless with our national security.

And Tim Scott called it a serious case with serious allegations.

Chris Christie, Trump’s chief critic in the race, called on his fellow candidates to stop avoiding saying negative things about the former president. He told them to stop treating Mr Trump like Voldemort and say his name. The signs are that some of those candidates, feeling vulnerable, may become bolder.
